Biography

Maarit Koponen is a university lecturer at the University of Turku, School of Languages and Translation Studies (Department of English). She is currently (August 2019 - December 2020) on research leave and working as a post doctoral researcher for the MeMAD (Methods for Managing Audiovisual Data) project, focusing on MT quality evaluation.

Koponen's research focuses on translation technology, particularly machine translation, translation quality evaluation and translation processes. She teaches courses in translation, translation technology and English.

Maarit Koponen has a PhD in Language Technology from the University of Helsinki, and her doctoral thesis (published in 2016) focused on the relationship between machine translation errors and post-editing effort. At the University of Helsinki, she also participated as a research assistant in research projects examining the reading of academic texts and comics. She has previously taught computer-assisted translation and post-editing at the University of Helsinki, and translation and English grammar at the University of Eastern Finland. She has also worked as a professional technical translator.
