Purpose

This article structures findings on inclusion in the workplace across different levels of analysis to enhance understanding of its multilevel nature.

Design/methodology/approach

A narrative literature review synthesizes existing theories and bridges perspectives on inclusion in the workplace.

Findings

The individual sense of inclusion is characterized by belonging, uniqueness and acceptance. Interpersonal and organizational factors influence individual experiences through mechanisms such as inclusive behaviors, leadership and practices. Contextual differences in norms, values and power further shape the processes of including and being included.

Originality/value

Literature on inclusion is structured to help academics and practitioners narrow the gap between individual experiences and organizational aims related to inclusion.
