This chapter focuses on the use of design thinking in the day-to-day management and leadership in nursing. Nurse managers and leaders work under constant pressure in a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) environment, which is subject to change and operational uncertainty. This chapter presents tools for the nurse manager to apply design thinking methods in self-management and to support of his or her own work and to facilitate changes in nursing practice. As a case example, the chapter also presents an innovation in nursing leadership implemented using design thinking, which has been widely adopted in Finnish-specialized nursing. The innovation is based on Outi Tuominen’s PhD work. This example aims to encourage nursing professionals to innovate new solutions and methods for healthcare using the design thinking approach.
