D.Sc.(Tech.) Tuomas Mäkilä works as an Associate Professor of Digital Transformation and Software Engineering at the Department of Computing of the University of Turku. Mäkilä has D.Sc.(Tech.) degree in software engineering from University of Turku in 2012. Mäkilä has been a responsible leader in numerous externally funded research and development projects with the total value closing to 2 million euros, and has participated the preparation and the implementation of projects worth several million euros. Mäkilä has published c. 50 scientific papers.
Mäkilä has been a responsible leader in numerous externally funded research and development projects with the total value closing to 3 million euros, and has participated the preparation and the implementation of projects worth several million euros. His research has covered the topics of sofware development process modeling, agile methodlogies, cloud services, and applications of gamification and mixed reality technologies. In many development projects Mäkilä has lead the development of working software prototypes to investigate the possibilities of ICT systems in various fields (e.g. haelthcare, cultural heritage, education, manufacturing industry) of the digitilized society. Mäkilä has also participated activities involving commercialization of the research results e.g. through spin-off companies.
Mäkilä is head of the Software Engineering major in both national M.Sc.(Tech.) in ICT and international MDP in ICT programmes at the University of Turku. He has also lead two large continuing education programs: “Full Stack Training (30 ECTS)” –program 2018 – 2023 and “Game Developer Trainee (30 ECTS)” –program 2012 – 2014 (in collaboration with the Turku University of Applied Sciences). During his academic career Mäkilä has participated the teaching of over 30 unversity courses and supervised c. 25 M.Sc. theses.
