Biography

I'm currently working as an Academy of Finland Research Fellow (2021-2026) at the School of Languages and Translation Studies, University of Turku.

I received my PhD (Applied Linguistics) in 2014 from the University of Jyväskylä. I have subsequently worked at the universities of Helsinki and Jyväskylä as postdoctoral researcher and university lecturer. I am also a Docent in language education (University of Helsinki, 2020).

Research

My research focuses on how telepresence robots can be used to support participation in hybrid language teaching. In my AoF Research Fellow project, I study social interaction in hybrid classrooms from a multimodal conversation analytic perspective, looking at how the mobility of the telepresence robot can be used as a resource for interaction and participation.

I have previously investigated interaction in a variety of pedagogical contexts such as classrooms, workshops or 'in the wild'. Alongside telepresence robots, I'm also interested in how other technological tools such as social robots, bots, tablet computers and smartphones might transform educational practices.
