Religious education; Swedish-speaking Finns; minority governance; diversity
Through the MINDEL research project I study wellbeing and sense of belonging among minorty youth. As a PhD student I research Islamic religious education in Swedish-speaking schools in Finland
My background is in teaching: Swedish, litterature, Swedish as a second language, and more recently religious education from primary school to upper secondary education in Sweden and Finland. Since 2024 I'm a PhD-student at the Faculty of Education, University of Helsinki, and a part of the National Graduate School in Islamic Studies coordinated by Linnaeus University in Växjö, Sweden. Since May 2026, I work part-time for the MINDEL research project at the University of Turku.
As a PhD-student at the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Helsinki, I explore the double minority position of being both Swedish-speaking and of Muslim background in Finnish basic education. I approach this through the lens of Islamic Religious Education for Swedish-speaking students within Finnish compulsory basic education, with the intention of exploring the prevalence of the phenomenon, the attitudes and methods of teachers engaged in the subject, and the experiences and reasoning behind participation in Islamic Religious Education in Swedish among the families involved.
