Dr Jeong-Im Hyun is a Finnish Docent and University Lecturer at the University of Turku, Finland. She holds a PhD in Sociology from Sorbonne University (Paris IV) and has over 15 years of international academic experience in Korea, Finland, Lithuania, and the United Kingdom. Her research focuses on contemporary Korean society, social movements, political communication, and the integration and identity formation of North Korean refugees in South Korea and the UK. Dr Hyun is also known for her comparative work on European and Korean mass mobilisations and the global diffusion of Korean popular culture. She has published in several peer-reviewed journals, including Hermès, Sociétés, Contention, and Pacific Affairs.
Contemporary Korean society; social movements and democratization; political communication and conspiracy theories; North Korean refugees’ identity and integration; comparative studies of Europe and Korea; globalization and Korean popular culture (Hallyu); transnational identity; sociology of culture and politics in East Asia.
Dr. Jeong-Im Hyun has over 15 years of university-level teaching experience in Korea, Finland, Lithuania, and the United Kingdom. She has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses on Korean politics, inter-Korean relations, social movements, and East Asian societies. Her teaching emphasizes comparative and interdisciplinary approaches to Korean Studies, integrating sociological theory with contemporary cultural and political issues. She has also supervised postgraduate research and contributed to curriculum development in Korean Studies and East Asian Studies programs.
