Biography

I am a teacher and researcher in Cultural History, specialising in urban history and the environmental humanities. During the 2026–2027 academic year, I am working as Senior lecturer in Cultural History. I received my doctorate in Cultural History in 2011. Since then, I have held a range of academic positions, including University lecturer in Landscape Studies in Pori, Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Landscape Architecture at Aalto University and Åbo Akademi University, and Senior Research Fellow and Senior lecturer in Cultural History. Since 2020, I have held the title of Docent in the field of Urban Cultural History.

Alongside my academic work, I have been actively involved in a variety of professional and scholarly roles. These have included being a board member of the Finnish Society for Urban Studies and  of ALUS (Association for Literary Urban Studies), an international scholarly association that brings together researchers working on literary urban studies. Through this role, I came to represent the association in FILLM (The International Federation for Modern Languages and Literatures), which is  umbrella organization affiliated with UNESCO. Since 2018, I have been a member of the curatorial team of  ABOAGORA. Since the beginning of 2026, I have also served as a member of the editorial board of the journal Lähihistoria.

Research

During the academic year 2026-2027, I work as a University Lecturer in Cultural History. I teach first-year history students on the Historical and Archaeological Skills course and supervise the thematic seminar in Arts, Popular Culture, and Media History for MA students. I am also the lecturer responsible for examinations in Classical Archaeology and for the workshop in Popular Culture and Media History.

Together with Hannu Salmi, I co-lead a research group that brings together doctoral candidates and post-doctoral researchers working on nineteenth- and twentieth-century topics. The group operates in collaboration with the Research Group for Arts, Popular Culture, and Media History.
