This article examines the late medieval Swedish bishops’ visits to the papal Curia in
Rome. The analysis concentrates on the two most significant reasons for bishops to travel to
the Holy See: the episcopal appointment process and consecration as well as the ad limina
visits of the bishops. The discussion is limited to the late medieval period. It begins from c. the
1450s, when the popes had returned to Rome after the Great Schism and the period of councils,
and continues until the Swedish Reformation, which officially took place in 1527 and caused
the split of the Swedish Church from the Catholic Church in Rome. The article is based on
medieval papal documentation.
