In Finland, where women had been granted the right to vote in 1906, the popularized figure of the “New Woman” provided a flexible and marketable persona for the female artist. This chapter explores the approaches to “New Womanhood” as a cultural trope by looking at three artists: Ester Helenius, Ingrid Ruin, and Ingrid Söderström, who all attracted acute media attention during the second half of the 1920s.
