Abstract

This study aims to describe the expectations and learning motivation of basic level paramedic students during a 24-hour first aid training exercise. Grounded in expectancy-value theory, the research employs a qualitative approach with a sample of 35 students. Data were collected through pre- and post-exercise questionnaires (open ended ques-tions) and focus group interviews. The data analysed with deductive content analysis guided by the expectancy-value theory. The analysis revealed three main categories for both expectations; 1) Expectations of learning new things and applying existing knowledge, 2) Expectations of developing team-work skills and 3) Expectations of the learning environment) and learning motivation; 1) The value of success experiences, 2) The value of feedback related to teamwork and 3) The value of the learning environment). The findings suggest that intensive and new training sessions may have a positive connection to students’ learning motivation and to their expectations towards learning
