This chapter explores how technology integration influences trust in international business (IB), utilizing the causal layered analysis (CLA) framework to examine both near-term technological changes and long-term shifts in societal organization and understanding. The chapter focusses on trust in IB relations and suggests we need to broaden our conceptualization to include technology-based trust. The CLA offers an analytical framework to explore the future development of trust in IB relations and the impact technological development from blockchain to AI might have. The analysis begins from the impact of cryptocurrencies on monetary economy and smart contracts on global trade. These developments influence trust in IB relations by broadening the conceptualization of trust for human centred to include technology-based trust. When analyzing the long-term shifts, the focus is broadened to include technology development more generally and how its integration more deeply in our societies can lead to the transition from a managerial to a technological worldview. This discussion aims to question the prevailing assumption of central and critical actors in IB environment as well as the way we conceptualize trust and IB relations. The chapter concludes by highlighting potential future developments and their implications for trust in IB. The chapter ends by calling IB researchers to think beyond the human actor in our conceptualizations and theorizing as well as to explore new methodologies and types of data.
