This chapter sets out to provide an introduction and contextualization to the volume by way of an overview of the other chapters and a discussion of the volume’s meta-level implications. First, we discuss interconnections between linguistics, the philosophy of linguistics, and the history of linguistics, examining both earlier proposals and the evidence provided by the other chapters. Second, we discuss two overarching themes that unify the chapters: normativity and analogy.
