Tiivistelmä

This report examines the experiences of Finnish young people about the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic for well-being, schooling and future faith in the post-pandemic era. The data was collected as group interviews in the spring of 2025 (N = 29), in which young people over the age of 15 were asked to reflect on their own experiences in relation to the results of two studies (Niemelä & Laaninen 2024; Repo 2024) on the well-being of young people several years after the acute phase of the pandemic. Based on the results, the pandemic does not appear to be an unambiguous turning point in the well-being of young people. Instead, their experiences highlight individual life situations as well as post-pandemic social changes, such as economic uncertainty, cuts in social security, the consequences of the war in Ukraine, as well as general unpredictability. Young people's faith in the future and trust in society appear to have weakened in many ways in the post-pandemic era. Experiences in schooling were twofold: some young people benefited from the flexibility of distance education, while others felt that learning and support became more difficult, especially in the context of educational transitions. Distance education and exceptional arrangements were felt to have treated young people unequally. The results highlight the need to look at the well-being of young people in time, differentiating between the situation during and after a pandemic, and as part of the polycrisis of the early 2020s, where the challenges of well-being of young people are intertwined with the transitions of educational paths and wider societal uncertainty. The report is part of the Children First: Nordic policies and children´s wellbeing research project, which produces new scientific knowledge on the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on children´s wellbeing and identifies policy options to enhance children´s wellbeing and resilience in Nordic countries. This three-year project (2023–2026) is carried out by a consortium of five universities: University of Turku (coordinator), University Iceland, Stockholm University, Uppsala University and Åbo Akademi University. The project is funded by NordForsk.
