Abstract

The invention of smart packaging has resulted in a tremendous change in the conventional food packaging industry, by utilizing RFID tags coupled with humidity sensors to evaluate food quality and prevent food spoilage. This paper presents a compact and high-density moisture sensor integrated chipless RFID tag comprising sixteen resonators, with an overall size of 5 mm×5 mm, where each resonator corresponds to one bit of data within the frequency range of 2 GHz to 10 GHz. The tag is constructed on a flexible laminate, specifically Rogers /RT/Duroid 5880. In addition to sensing moisture, the chipless sensor tag also features an identification section with an overall sixteen resonant elements for storing information. With a high code density of 64 bits /cm2, the tag can effectively label 65,536 unique items. The simulated and measured results validate the performance of the proposed tag. Therefore, the proposed chipless RFID tag is well-suited for commercial deployment across a broad range of Internet of Things (IoT) applications.
