This chapter examines the inroads the field of memory studies has made in different academic disciplines in the Nordic countries in recent decades, such as in history, oral history, ethnology and folklore studies, literary and film studies. It traces the pathways these studies have followed both specific to particular countries, for instance their divergent experiences in World War ii, and commonalities in the region, such as Nordic colonialism, in order to inspect both national, regional memories and their intersection with transnational and global currents in memory cultures. Focusing on the Nordic countries as a region of memory not only allows for an analysis of memories and their mediations in terms of their specific spatial and material environments, but also opens up new perspectives on the political contexts and consequences, ideological and symbolic functions, and temporal legacies of regionalization in relation to memory processes.
