This article discusses the Aanaar (Inari) Saami press. The article contains both facts about the history, current state and topics covered by the press in Aanaar Saami, and personal experiences of writing for Aanaar Saami language magazines. A considerable number of magazines and newspapers have been published in Aanaar Saami, considering that the language has an estimated less than five hundred speakers, who have traditionally lived in one country, Finland, and even in one municipality, Inari. In addition to the traditional paper magazine, the Aanaar Saami language press has successfully utilised the Internet. Currently, the paper magazine Anarâš is published a few times a year, in addition to which the electronic news website Anarâš aavis is updated at least three times a week. The Anarâš magazine has a long tradition, as it began publishing in 1988.
The magazines and newspapers are published by Anarâškielâ servi ry. i.e. the Aanaar Saami Language Society, which has previously also published other magazines and newspapers. A diverse group of people from different backgrounds write for the magazines; for many writers, Saami is not their first language. There are no regular publications in other Saami languages in Finland.
