Abstract
Phytochemicals offer significant potential for managing and treating Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by targeting key pathological mechanisms, including amyloid-beta (Aβ) aggregation, tau protein hyperphosphorylation, neuroinflammation, and oxidative stress. When combined with conventional pharmacological treatments, phytochemicals may enhance therapeutic efficacy and slow disease progression. Compounds such as polyphenols and flavonoids are known for their strong antioxidant properties, which help combat oxidative stress, one of the major contributors to neurodegeneration in AD. Their anti-inflammatory effects further alleviate neuroinflammation, a key factor in AD pathology. In addition, certain phytochemicals exhibit antiamyloidogenic properties, preventing the formation and aggregation of Aβ plaques. They also inhibit tau hyperphosphorylation, reducing neurofibrillary tangle formation and contributing to the slowing of disease progression. Future research should focus on combination therapies that integrate phytochemicals with conventional medications to optimize treatment outcomes and enhance cognitive function in AD patients.
