Abstract

The complex and multifaceted nature of a firm’s internationalisation process, involving internal and external actors of different kinds, offers numerous opportunities for novel and impactful research. Yet, for too long, conversation on internationalisation processes has been limited to a debate for and against the Uppsala Model, and its concentration on choices around foreign market entry. This obscures other research opportunities, particularly with regards to the internal transformation of the firm that internationalisation represents. It also does not equip the field with the conceptual tools to investigate how firms are internationalising in our contemporary context of social, geopolitical and environmental challenges. This PDW aims to re-energise the research agenda on the internationalisation processes of the firm. It offers novice and experienced scholars tangible avenues to generate new and impactful research agendas on the variety of processes that unfold as firms internationalise. To do this, the workshop builds on recent developments in theories and methods, in the form of the Helsinki internationalisation process model and process research methods. It aims to inspire
discussions around three main themes: 1) Generating novel questions on internationalisation processes; 2) Revisiting problematisation for process theorising; and 3) Identifying appropriate and useful methods to study internationalisation processes. The workshop will be organised in three parts: Part 1 involving an expert panel presenting the three themes; part 2 consisting of interactive roundtable discussions to explore the different themes further; and part 3 providing pre-registered participants with an opportunity to pitch and receive feedback on their novel research ideas.
