Abstract

This chapter explores the emerging role of virtual expatriates as global leaders within multinational corporations, focusing on the impact of technological acumen. As global business operations increasingly apply virtual work processes, this shift presents both opportunities and challenges for leaders who need to perform the expatriate job role from a distance. Through a review of the literature, the chapter examines the unique characteristics of virtual expatriate assignments, including the reliance on digital communication technology. The chapter also delves into the complexities of this type of leadership, highlighting the skills required to navigate global complexity, manage ambiguity, and span organizational and cultural boundaries. By emphasizing the importance of embracing technology, the chapter argues that virtual expatriates may benefit from developing competencies in advanced digital tools to maintain effective leadership across borders.
