As Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to advance rapidly, its impact on various aspects of
society, including managerial competencies, becomes increasingly relevant. However, little is
known about how the use of AI in organizations will impact managerial competencies. This
systematic literature review aims to explore and unveil what managerial competencies are
essential for implementing AI in companies and to what extent these new competencies differ
from the traditional managerial competencies previously identified in management theory. By
analyzing a diverse range of scholarly articles, this study provides a comprehensive overview
of the current knowledge on the subject. Findings reveal that managers require specifically
technological understanding as well as competencies in leadership and communication and
collaboration. Furthermore, most of the traditional managerial competencies will still be
relevant for AI (e.g. initiating and directing actions), while others will get enhanced by AI (e.g.
gathering and analysing data and information with AI), or have been emerged and became
important recently, especially in the field of lifelong learning. This paper contributes to studies
investigating the impact of AI on the workplace by complementing the current taxonomies of
managerial competencies with an updated list of 40 AI-related managerial competencies to
ensure the optimal use of AI. The results also assist organizations in selecting the competencies
on which to concentrate their training efforts for the successful implementation of AI.
