Tiivistelmä

The role of US mainstream media in representing feminism and the women's
movement has interested scholars since the early years of second‐wave
feminism. However, less is known about how feminism has been represented
and negotiated in European countries, particularly non‐anglophone
countries. This entry briefly describes how feminism has been covered in
European news media by focusing on print media in the United Kingdom,
the Netherlands, and the Nordic countries from the late 1960s until the
present day. It shows that certain images of feminism and feminists have
traveled across national borders and through time, but media
representations have also had local specificities. Additionally, the
media strategies adopted by feminist activists have had an effect on the
portrayal of feminism, as have newsroom practices, and journalists who
take an active role in promoting feminism.
