Tiivistelmä

Nordic countries are commonly seen as the most gender equal in the
world. This has also been the case in terms of professional journalism.
However, there are variations in the number of women journalists within
the Nordic region. Finland appears most often as the forerunner for
women journalists' whereas the road to the newsroom has been most
difficult for Icelandic women. However, Finnish journalists have stayed
behind their other Nordic colleagues in terms of women journalists'
active drive for gender equality within the profession. A comparative
approach reveals the role of sociohistorical context and individual
journalists and/or media organizations challenging the existing gender
order in Nordic journalism.
