Abstract

The chapter examines toponyms in the Åland archipelago against the backdrop of seafaring during the Viking Age. It evaluates more and less known etymologies for the Old Nordic words *wiking and *wikingR, and proposes e new interpretation for the etymology of the name "Åland".
