This (visual) essay reflects on my walking drawing practice as it emerges from extensive research into scientific and artistic visual abstractions of human gait from the nineteenth century to the present. Walking-drawing, also known as ambulatory drawing, refers to an artistic process whose outcomes can only be achieved through the specific movements generated by human locomotion. Part of my practice involves making drawings with a portable box, concealed in a bag or backpack. This blind drawing process cannot depict objects but instead captures time and bodily movements while paradigmatically surrendering control in mark-making. Both my research and practice culminated in four projects presented here: the 'Walking Abstractions' workshop-exhibition (2023, Rovaniemi, Finland), the piece 'Four hours in the life of my walking body' (2023), the 'Porto Walks' series produced for my practice-sharing session at the conference Drawing Across x Along x Between University Borders (2024, Porto, Portugal), and 'Love Letters to Walking Art & Science' exhibited at DRAW Space (2024, Sydney, Australia).
