The University of Turku Botanical Garden is situated in SW Finland, on the island of Ruissalo. Due to its location, it is the most climatically favourable of the Finnish University botanical gardens. The garden encompasses a collection of approximately 5,000 different species and varieties of plants, of which over 2,000 are in the six greenhouses. The Botanical Garden is visited by approximately 40,000 visitors annually.
The Tree Genus of the Year 2024, chosen by the Dendrological Society, was the birch (Betula). The genus is well represented in the Turku University Botanical Garden. There are 72 different birches growing in the garden's collections, but there are almost as many unidentified ones. There are approximately 25 taxa in the plantations. All birches currently alive in the garden and their origins or sources of supply are listed at hte end of this article.
