The growth of Finland's export-oriented economy requires investments in transport, write Senior Researcher Yrjö Myllylä and Research Director Jari Kaivo-oja. "Finland's logistics costs are 11 percent of GDP, in Sweden 7 percent. In October 2025, the Nordic Council approved a proposal supporting cooperation between the governments of Finland, Sweden and Norway to develop a fixed logistics link from the Atlantic coast of Norway to southeast Finland. The concrete proposal is to establish a project group to establish the link and secure funding. The connection would create conditions for regional development, give the EU a means to support border regions, and enable a new development path for regions along the logistics route.
