This chapter addresses queer cultural memory, queer memory activism, and queer
memory studies in the Nordic countries. It outlines the emergence of queer theory in
Nordic academia since the 1990s and describes memory activism that has strived to
include queer pasts in Nordic memory institutions in the 2010s. The chapter analyzes
three cases of cultural remembering from the 2010s and 2020s where queer pasts have
been imagined in literature and cinema. By addressing Mian Lodalen’s and Jonas
Gardell’s novels from Sweden, Sjón’s novel from Iceland, the movie Tom of Finland,
and their public reception, the chapter demonstrates under what conditions queer
pasts can be included in the national memory landscapes and what new exclusions
are created in the process.
