This paper is based on a case study of two Finnish translations
of Silent Spring. The first one was a journalistic translation that
appeared as a serial in the newspaper Helsingin Sanomat in
the winter of 1963 and the second one a book that was brought
out by Tammi Publishers later the same year (re-editions: 1963,
1970). I examine the translation and reception of Silent Spring
in Finland by zooming in on two paratextual voices that accompanied
the Finnish translations in 1963 and 1970. My findings
suggest that these voices, which seem to have been supported
by other peritextual material, reveal hidden strategic moves of
the parties that published the translations.
