Editing a scholarly book that is a compilation of chapters written by various authors is a complex and demanding task. To succeed, editors need to choose a topic/theme of significance, engage a group of experts committed to the project, persuade a reputable publisher of the book’s marketability, respond to peer review of the book proposal, work with authors to refine and finalize each chapter, and shepherd the book through the production process. Although there are thousands of publications about writing journal articles and editing journals, searches of the literature on writing book chapters and editing scholarly books yield surprisingly few resources. Much of what does exist is scattered across different fields or embedded in more general works about scholarly publishing. This practical article addresses that gap in the literature by synthesizing the relevant research and combining it with the published advice of expert editors about how to edit a multi-authored volume. It is structured around eight recommendations for scholars in the field of education who are interested in leading an edited book project. Throughout the article, the four co-authors draw upon their experiences as book editors to provide insight into the process of successfully planning and publishing a high-quality book that consists of chapters contributed by various authors.
