Superhero comics have spread globally during their almost 90-year history. As a quintessentially American form of popular culture, the iconic characters and their stories have also undergone a number of changes as they are published transnationally. This chapter presents a short history of the genre of American superhero comics, as well as the specificities regarding their publication in other cultures and languages. As the main theoretical standpoint of this chapter, I present the discussion regarding the use of the concepts of translation and adaptation. Changes in publication format, the cutting and rearranging of pages and panels, and the use of domestication strategies in the translation of superhero comics are very common, and it is worthwhile to also consider these changes from the point of view of adaptation studies. The chapter concludes with examples of how superhero comics have been altered for publication in the Nordic countries, namely Finland and Sweden.
