Space agencies and private companies are preparing for human missions to Mars and the plans they announced stimulate the public’s imagination. It can however be highly challenging for one to obtain an objective perspective on what can really be achieved and what is worth achieving. The book this chapter introduces aims to provide researchers with an objective review of the field, the policy makers with a reference to make informed decisions, and the public with a tool to form educated opinions.
