The importance of social networks in providing entrepreneurs with various resources and support is widely demonstrated. However, the origins and the antecedents of these networks, especially the personal-level factors that may drive networking activity, have been neglected. The study aims to examine the role of entrepreneurs’ entrepreneurial orientation in their networking activity. The main research questions are: 1) Does entrepreneurs’ entrepreneurial orientation influence their networking activity? and 2) How does entrepreneurs’ entrepreneurial orientation shape their networking activity? We employ a mixed-method approach and analyze both quantitative data (n=167) collected from Finnish creative entrepreneurs and qualitative interview data (n=21) collected from creative entrepreneurs in Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands. Our findings suggest that entrepreneurs with higher levels of entrepreneurial orientation––risk taking, innovativeness and proactivity––engage more actively in networking. Additionally, entrepreneurs appear to seek similar resources from their networks regardless of their level entrepreneurial orientation. However, more entrepreneurially orientated entrepreneurs were more conscious of their networks, utilized them more efficiently, and were more into building networks for the common good than those with lower levels of entrepreneurial orientation. Accordingly, our study highlights the need to not only focus on the benefits that entrepreneurs receive from their networks but also to understand the roles they have within these networks. Different personal attributes, such as entrepreneurial orientation, may considerably influence how entrepreneurs network, utilize them, and collaborate with other entrepreneurs to build these networks.
