Abstract

The UNESCO Global Futures Literacy Network was established in 2012 with the aim of advancing global futures literacy via interdisciplinary research and learning experiments for knowledge generation. Futures literacy has been proposed as a key capability for engaging with the future and a distinctive strand of futures studies aims to better understand it and help people develop it. This chapter aims to present key ideas behind this  “Futures Literacy Approach” and discusses how it is similar and different from other approaches used in futures studies. Its value is illustrated through exploration of some of the work of the UNESCO Global Futures Literacy Network, with particular focus on contributions from UNESCO Chair on Learning for Transformation and Planetary Futures at University of Turku (Finland). We present three cases of action research: establishing the award-winning concept of Finnish Futures Day, creating futures curriculum for Dubai Future Academy, and implementing a multi-partner, cross-Europe futures literacy experiments as part of the portfolio innovation of EIT Climate-KIC. In conclusion, the chapter discusses the value the Futures Literacy Approach – with its emphasis on capabilities – can bring to the futures field as a whole.
