This chapter provides detailed insights into how questions related to foreign investments and national security are addressed in Finland. What makes studying the Finnish case both interesting and relevant is the geographical proximity to Russia, the relatively high level of economic interaction between the two countries, a particular Finnish approach to cooperation with Russia influenced strongly by history, and not least the specific Finnish approach to national security that has over the past decades been based on the idea of self-reliance but has undergone a dramatic turn in the wake of Russian aggression against Ukraine resulting in the decision of Finland to join NATO announced in 2022.
