The utilization of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), commonly called drones, has experienced significant growth in recent years. This article focuses on acquiring practical insights into the varied requirements of drones in the domains of education and research by conducting thorough interviews with experts in the field. The study conducted as part of the UCN-drone project aims to gain a comprehensive understanding and analyze the various requirements and challenges related to the use of drones in Finland. The study examines essential aspects such as technology, legislation, applications, educational needs, and research. We have emphasized the influence of ongoing evolution and enhancement of legislation on drone usage. The study identifies essential prerequisites in the UAS/drone industry, including drone operators, inspections, surveillance in construction, modeling, and other drone application domains. It has been identified that specific skills, such as programming, mathematics, fundamental engineering, and practical abilities, are required. In addition, the survey emphasizes the required skills for emerging roles in drone technology, specifically emphasizing the need for pilots and professionals in sensor technology, artificial intelligence (AI), legislation, and safety.
