Taking on a new leadership role presents both challenges and
opportunities for your development and learning as a leader. In this
chapter, we discuss how setting and pursuing personal and shared goals
can help you to navigate the transition into a new leadership role. As a
leader you typically have both personal goals (e.g., to be a competent
leader) and shared goals with your team (e.g., to successfully complete a
project). We provide exercises for you to assess your leadership goals
and evaluate different aspects of your goals as well as the shared goals
with your team. We also invite you to think of the people with whom you
are pursuing your leadership goals. A key takeaway from this chapter is
to reflect on your personal and shared goals as a leader, make plans to
attain your goals, and develop your relationships with the people who
will support you achieve your goals as a new leader.
