In this chapter, we discuss the paradigm shift from a traditional, individual blaming approach to understanding mental health crisis towards trauma-informed thinking, the impact of coercive practices on trauma and retraumatisation, and the range of trauma-informed care (TIC) approaches and interventions currently used in mental health inpatient settings. Most importantly, we will be sharing the lived accounts of one of the authors to learn about and better understand the first-hand experience of trauma, retraumatisation, and recovery. We will be reflecting on the direction of trauma-informed care in mental health settings, aspirations for the future, and implications for practice and research.
