Abstract

The Finnish Bryophyte Expert Group made its annual excursion to Salla National Park and its surroundings in Salla commune in Eastern Lapland in August 2024. Hilly forested landscapes about 200‒400 m a.s.l. characterize the area. We visited field sites with nutrient-rich springs and fens, calcareous rocks, cliffs and old-growth forests. Altogether 264 bryophyte species were observed. These included 185 species of mosses and 79 species of liverworts. We found a previously unknown spring complex with abundant Palustriella commutata in the western slopes of Kolvivaara north of Aatsinki village. The area is owned by the state but unprotected. Also, Fossombronia incurva was detected growing on mineral soil by a forest road near Koutoiva in Salla National Park. This is the second observation of the species in Finland, the first one being in Helsinki in 1873. Six species new to Koillismaa biogeographical province were recorded. We present a complete list of the observed species together with information on their localities.
