Abstract

Excavations were conducted at Late Iron Age inhumation cemetery of Toppolanmäki and cremation cemetery of Haukila Koirankivi in 2017 and 2018. Two graves, initially opened in 1936 and 1937, were reopened at Toppolanmäki and studied with modern methods. The bones of the buried individuals had been left in the ground, enabling the application of scientific methods in the study of the individuals and their burial customs. One of the graves contained an evergreen padding of Sphagnum and Lycopodium annotinum. The excavation of Haukila Koirankivi revealed several Late Iron Age artefacts, for example, an axe and a sword, which were placed near large boulders. The excavated area contained fragments of at least one human individual and bear claws. Charred juniper twigs and berries were also found.
