Abstract

Sport is a compelling tool to promote peace, tolerance, and understanding. Today, this peace-building dimension linked to sport is of greater significance due to the technologies of transnationlization. Large-scale events such as the World Cup and the Olympics have indeed extended across nations through the media. In fact, the 2022 FIFA World Cup was followed by over 4.5 billion people, and almost all the information related to this event was obtained through the media. In this chapter, I examine titles and descriptions from two transnational media channels, Al Jazeera (English/Arabic) and France 24 (English/Arabic), based in Qatar and France, respectively. The aim is to examine the way the 2022 FIFA World Cup was covered by identifying the positive peace dimensions present in headlines and descriptions and later comparing them to the negative dimensions for an objective overview. The findings reveal that even though some negative dimensions do occur in the titles and descriptions of Al Jazeera and France 24 when reporting on FIFA World Cup, the positive dimensions win. In addition, the results show that the titles are generally formulated in a way that highlights the victory of the football team rather than focusing on the loss.
