Tiivistelmä

The act of shopping is an important facet of consumers’ lives and the activity is constantly evolving, making the investigation and understanding of this field an important effort. While the mall industry appears to be saturated in many of the developed western countries, it is now witnessing fast growth in Saudi Arabia through the flow of both local and foreign investments. In fact, some of the world’s largest shopping developers are now in the Middle East, which has been noticed in the last five years. For instance, Majid Al Futtaim, which operates several shopping malls in the region, is set to invest up to SR20 billion by 2029 in Saudi Arabia’s entertainment and retail sectors. This also includes the construction of a 300,000-square metre mall in the capital city, Riyadh, called the Mall of Saudi Arabia. One of the motivating factors for this trend could be the rise in disposable income of young Saudis because there are more young men and women joining the workforce in Saudi Arabia than before. The increase stimulates the consumption or demand for more goods. To buttress this, a Saudi Arabian newspaper popularly known as Saudi Gazette published in 2018 that the total value of the kingdom’s retailing industry would grow from $106 billion in 2018 to $119 billion in 2023. Of this, the newspaper stated that offline retailing values would see a $10 billion increase, from $103 billion in 2018 to $113 billion in 2023. Its estimation seems to be right because the recent increase in the number of tourists in the country, especially early this year, shows that the retailing industry of the Kingdom is growing rapidly. Also, it is mentioned by an organisation called Global Media Insight in 2022 that the Saudi Arabian population is seeing a tremendous surge in the number of newly opened shopping malls in the hopes of catering to the needs of its emerging consumer market.
