A sense of belonging at work is like “the elephant in the room”—everyone knows and feels it, but no one talks about it, especially in professional settings. The purpose of this empirical study is to bring to the fore the concept of ‘belonging at work’. Specifically, this study presents opposing viewpoints from 45 internationally mobile employees who are perceived as minority groups in the corporate mainstream. These individuals face complexities that local groups may not experience, such as social loneliness, language barriers, ‘othering’ problems, and social power imbalances. Their sense of belonging is thus perplexing, extending beyond their needs or wants. Drawing on the conceptual framework and empirical data, a model is introduced to capture varying ways of belonging at work. This study’s findings and the model presented prompt relevant actions, such as employers and local and international employees alike, to rethink what needs to be done to build a sense of belonging at work, an essential element of workplace inclusion.
