Diasporas are social formations of individuals and their families that share ethnic, religious, cultural, linguistic or other elements and maintain ties to their heritage, diasporas and/or country of origin. Individual diasporans are embedded in families with migratory experiences and these families are often entrepreneurial, setting up diaspora family businesses (DFB) and even business groups. DFB are heterogeneous and highly contextual businesses but less known in family business research. Diaspora business tends to span country contexts transnationally and internationally. They have special socio-cultural capabilities. These characteristics are discussed and a typology of DFB is introduced. Finally, definitions and implications are provided.
