We begin this overview of immigrant social integration in Finland with a presentation of the national context and the composition of the country’s immigrant population, and proceed to discuss and evaluate ideologies, policies, and programs on social integration. Next we highlight certain obstacles to integration, discuss unique aspects of Finnish society, and address future challenges. Our focus is on labour markets and social security, but we also touch on matters related to educational and cultural policy. Finland, a North European country located by the Baltic Sea, has been an independent nation-state since 1917.
