Molecularly imprinted polymers are one of the emerging tools of analytical chemistry, which have been widely studied as sorbents for the extraction of pharmaceuticals from various matrices. The process of greenification could be applied in different aspects, from using green monomer, choosing a less hazardous template, using green solvents, and computer-assisted predictions to miniaturization of the processes through microextraction techniques and real-time analysis devices.
This chapter will briefly introduce sorbents and the importance of pharmaceutical analysis. A general overview of green chemistry and its pillars is provided. Then, the chapter discusses and gives examples of how MIPs could be greenified in different stages (from the synthesis to the application). And in the end, it will shine a light on the path that future scientists should take so that we can achieve greener outcomes.
