Interest in Africa as the continent of the future, is heightening globally. This chapter presents four scenarios for African Governance Futures and describes the premises of the futures research and foresight work which generated these scenarios. The scenarios – “Africa United”, “Africa Thriving”, “Africa Defeated” and “Africa’s Lift-Off” – imagine governance, leadership, politics, and development in Africa until 2063. The scenarios were formulated as part of the work of the African Peer Review Mechanism (AU-APRM), which is an organ of the African Union (AU) that coordinates a good governance peer review system for African countries. Documented as the African Governance Report, the scenarios were adopted by the member states of the AU as a pioneering endeavour, paving way for subsequent African governance futures reports, as well as promoting futures research and studies and foresight work in Africa. At a time when Africa’s potential is being highlighted, the scenarios exemplify the beneficial contribution of open-minded anticipation in a continent that dreams of an elevated agency for the future.
