This chapter deals with the concept of competence, its different definitions, approaches and dimensions. The concepts of competence and competency can be identified from the literature and will be described in this chapter. Competence is the application of complex combinations of knowledge, performance, skills, values and attitudes. Competence can be approached from different perspectives. Competence includes various dimensions in constructing the concept, enabling the operationalisation as well. Competence, in particular as a professional competence, has been defined for each profession, including nursing and can be general or specific. Clinical competence, in turn, highlights the role of nursing as clinical, where such competence is of utmost importance. This chapter links competence to healthcare and especially to nursing care. Competence, professional, clinical and other types will be discussed in the literature. Wound care is one example of competence needed in clinical nursing, including knowledge, skills, attitudes, actions and performance. Some examples will be based on this framework in this chapter.
