We report the findings of a study on how small- and medium-sized family
enterprises (SMFEs) from rural areas in Finland get embedded for
internationalization. Our data consists of 36 interviews with entrepreneurs in
15 SMFEs plus secondary data. The hermeneutic model of international networking
among SMFEs for and during internationalization revolved around the practices, phases,
and outcomes of getting embedded for internationalization, taking both vertical
and horizontal time into consideration. To elucidate the process of getting internationally
embedded, we refer to literature on networks, entrepreneurship,
internationalization, and family business
