Abstract

The use of design thinking has increased in recent years in health care as new patient-centered and innovative solutions are sought for complex health care challenges and to improve the patient experience. This chapter includes an up-to-date introduction to health interventions using a design thinking approach. You will get an overview of what kind of solutions have been developed for health care with the method. A literature search was done in March 2022 and 15 studies were included in this review. Results will synthesize design thinking methods that were used in different studies and these results are presented by the five stages of the design thinking process, empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and testing. With this review, you are able to adapt and moderate the different design thinking methods from the design thinking process and use them, for example, in teaching or study design. The chapter also introduces methodological approaches of design thinking and two case examples from the health field, which will illustrate the complete design thinking process. The benefits and challenges of the design thinking approach in health interventions are discussed at the end of the chapter. They will provide useful information on design thinking and why its value is high in the field of health care.
